Happy 238th Birthday to the United States Navy!

By - Posted on October 11, 2013

Get ready to celebrate! The United States Navy is commemorating its 238th birthday.

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established the Continental Navy, which is now known as the United States Navy.  On this day, the Continental Congress dispatched a small naval force to support American Revolutionary war efforts.

The Continental Navy wasn’t expected to gain power over the British. Its mission, rather, was to raid the commerce transports that were supplying the British forces. While the Continental Navy had some triumphs, it also faced many challenges and was disbanded in 1783. The U.S. remained without a maritime force for almost 10 years, reestablishing its fleet in the 1790s.

The U.S. Navy Birthday Ball

Today, the United States Navy is one of the world’s finest maritime forces. To acknowledge and honor the Navy’s achievements,  each Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) has encouraged a Navy-wide birthday celebration.  This year, the Navy League of the United States will host the U.S. Navy’s official 238th Birthday Ball on October 12, at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C. The ball  will be attended by CNO, Adm. Jonathan Greenert, and inspiring wounded warrior and Navy SEAL Lt. Jason Redman will be the keynote speaker.

Omni Financial is proud to celebrate America’s naval heritage and salutes the brave sailors who safeguard our nation at home and around the world.  For more information on this special event, or to register and purchase tickets, visit the U.S. Navy Birthday Ball website.
