Every year, April serves as the Month of the Military Child (MOMC). Established in 1986 and sponsored by the Department of Defense Military Community and Family Policy, the MOMC honors military children and recognizes the unique challenges they face. Military children may have to deal with a deployed parent, frequent moves and other stressful situations that require personal sacrifices and strength beyond their years. Omni is proud to acknowledge the Month of the Military Child and to show support and appreciation to these brave children.
Organizations and U.S. military bases throughout the country and the world are observing this month in a variety of ways. The organization Operation Homefront recognizes the MOMC through its Military Child of the Year® awards. This honor is awarded annually to an outstanding military child from each branch of service.
Keep an eye out for Military Month of the Child events in your area!
There are all types of special local MOMC events for military children and their families taking place at and near military installations around the world. Check your on-base Child Development Center, Public Affairs office or Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) center to find out about activities that may be happening in your area.
One big initiative that celebrates MOMC is Purple Up! day. Purple Up! day is an annual event started by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) that encourages everyone to wear purple in honor of military-connected youth (MCY) and to show appreciation and support for their strength. Purple is the color that was chosen to symbolize all members of the military as it blends the colors of the Army (green), Navy (blue), Air Force (blue), Marines (red) and Coast Guard (blue). Look for ways you can get involved with Purple Up! day in your military community or your child’s school.
