November is Military Family Appreciation Month. Honor the season by giving your family a plan that lasts beyond the holidays.
This month, we celebrate Veterans Day on November 11 and recognize Military Family Appreciation Month. At Omni, we know military families do a lot behind the scenes: PCS moves, deployments, long stretches apart. Those same families often carry the heaviest load when the holidays arrive.
Between gifts, travel home and hosting, December can stretch any budget. And when a service member is deployed or a move is coming up, holiday plans can change fast.
The good news is that a little planning now can make December lighter. Here’s a simple four-step game plan to finish 2026 strong.
Step 1: Set Your Holiday Number First
Before you shop, decide on one total amount for gifts, travel and hosting. Then split it by person so everyone on your list has a set amount.
- Write down every name on your gift list, including teachers, coworkers and unit gift exchanges.
- Add travel costs early. Flights home often go up the closer you get to the holidays.
- Leave room for hosting: food, decorations and extra gas add up quickly.
A firm number, decided early, is the best defense against January regret.
Step 2: Map Your Paydays
Military pay comes on the 1st and the 15th. Line up your biggest purchases with payday so bills don’t get squeezed in between.
Keep in mind that pay can come early when a payday falls on a weekend or holiday. Plan around your actual deposit date, not the calendar date, and check the official pay schedule on DFAS or in myPay.
Step 3: Protect Your Cushion
Even a small emergency fund keeps an unexpected car repair or last-minute flight from turning into stress. It’s also your backstop if orders or deployment plans change mid-season.
Set up an automatic transfer from each paycheck, even if it’s $25. Through myPay, you can set up an allotment to send part of each paycheck straight to savings, so you never have to think about it.
Step 4: Use the Free Help You’ve Earned
You don’t have to plan alone. Military OneSource and your installation’s personal financial counselors offer free, confidential budgeting help to service members and their families.
A single session can help you build a holiday budget, sort out debt or set savings goals for the new year.
Omni is proud to serve the military community. If you have questions about your holiday plans or your options, our team at your local branch is here to help.
