Ten miles south of Tacoma, Washington is the Fort Lewis Army Base. Located in the Pierce County suburban community of Lakewood, Fort Lewis is part of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), which was formed when Fort Lewis and the McChord Air Force Base merged. The Yakima Training Center (YTC) is also located at JBLM.
According to MilitaryBases.com, JBLM is “one of the most requested duty stations in the U.S. Armed Forces.” Are you at Fort Lewis or McChord Air Force Base or planning on moving to the area? Here are five fun things to do around Fort Lewis:

1. View an active volcano at Mount Rainer National Park
The breathtaking Mount Rainer is 53 miles away from Lakewood. This active volcano and Washington state icon is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous United States and sits 14,410 feet above sea level. With 260 miles of trails, the park offers endless opportunities to explore its wildflower meadows, lake banks, streams, network of glaciers, river valleys and more.

2. Observe tide pool sea creatures at Olympic National Park
A scenic hour and a half drive from Lakewood is Olympic National Park, a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve. Boat or paddle through rivers and lakes and explore the tide pools along the shore. Take a day hike or plan an overnight wildness backpacking experience. There is an incredible array of outdoor activities every season of the year.
3. Steer yourself to the LeMay — America’s Car Museum, Tacoma
LeMay – America’s Car Museum is an extraordinary 165,000 square foot museum designed to “celebrate America’s love affair with the automobile.” This international destination for families and auto enthusiasts has been recognized as one of MSN’s 10 Best Automotive Museums worldwide. It features 250 domestic and foreign automobiles from throughout history, automotive artifacts and exhibits such as “Cadillac—The Standard of the World,” “British Invasion,” and “Legends of Motorsport: The NASCAR Story.”

4. Take beautiful pictures at Lakewood Gardens, Lakewood
Lakewood Gardens is a historically recognized estate showcasing beautiful gardens throughout this 10-acre treasure. Among the incredible gardens are the Shade Garden, Woodland Garden and Rock Garden. Collections include rhododendron, Japanese maples and champion trees of Washington State. Lakewood Gardens is also a wedding venue and offers gorgeous backdrops for photos. Military members can receive a reduced admission fee.
5. Experience live theatre at the Lakewood Playhouse, Lakewood
Lakewood Playhouse is a community theatre with a mission to be the cultural heart of Lakewood. It showcases plays and musicals for adults and children and hosts year-round camps and classes for kids. Purchase tickets online, by phone or in person on the day of the show. A military discount is available.
