Fun Things To Do Around Fort Riley

Fort Riley in northeastern Kansas is home to 15,000 active duty service members who are part of the 1st Infantry Division, also known as “The Big Red One.” Fort Riley between Manhattan and Junction City is located on the Kansas River in the scenic Flint Hills region known for its dramatic tallgrass prairies.
If “The Wizard of Oz” and “Smallville” are the only things that come to mind when you think of Kansas, you may be pleasantly surprised to discover that the state is filled with interesting and fun things to do. From delicious foods to incredible natural scenery to cultural events, there’s plenty to love about this region of the country. If you’re serving at Fort Riley, are relocating here or are visiting the counties of Geary and Riley, we suggest that you check out some of the following places and activities that are in the Junction City-Manhattan area.


Flint Hills Discovery Center, Manhattan
The Flint Hills Discovery Center in downtown Manhattan is a family-friendly culture and science museum that showcases the splendor of the Flint Hills. It features an immersive experience theater which brings the prairie to life. Visit the rooftop Prairie Garden Terrace for gorgeous views and take a journey through the Flint Hills ecosystem by exploring seven dynamic exhibits. The center also hosts special events and educational programs throughout the year. Bring your Military ID for a special admission discount.
BBQ Restaurants
Kansas is known for its barbeque dishes and Junction City certainly has its share of BBQ restaurants. JC’s BBQ & Grill, Hot Rodz BBQ and Billy Sims Barbeque are just a few. Bring your appetite for ribs, brisket, burgers and other meaty delights.
C.L. Hoover Opera House, Junction City
The Opera House has been a Junction City cultural landmark since 1880. It is home to several arts agencies and hosts musicals, concerts, workshops and other events related to the fine arts.  Visit the website for performance schedules.
Wildwood Adventure Park, Manhattan
Get your adrenaline pumping at Wildwood Adventure Park in Manhattan. This 80-acre park offers seven ziplines that will take you speeding through the trees in the scenic Flint Hills. For an extra challenge, take the 7-Zip Adventure featuring the 40-ft freefall. The park is open March through December but has special events and adventures year-round. Wildwood also has Military Discount Wednesdays. Contact the park for more information.
The Kansas Auto Racing Museum, Chapman
If you love racing, The Kansas Auto Racing Museum will get your motor running. This specialty museum located in Chapman houses the first NASCAR trophy and the first NHRA trophy. Visitors to the 21-acre museum can explore restored race cars and racing memorabilia and view rare film footage.
