Military discounts for movie and theatre tickets

Can’t wait to see the next big blockbuster? Want to take in that Broadway show everyone is talking about?  Movies and live performances give us a chance to take a step out of our everyday lives and into different worlds for a few hours.  Entertainment can be expensive though. According to The National Association of Theater Owners, the average cost of a movie ticket in the first quarter of 2017 was a record high $8.84.1 Plays, musicals, and other live performances offer incredible experiences, but ticket costs can be quite steep. The New York Times reports that the average Broadway show ticket is $109, with some tickets for megahits like “Hamilton” costing a whopping $849.  
But you don’t have to pay full price for movie and theatre tickets if you know where to look. There are theatres throughout the country that offer military discounts to members of the U.S. Armed Forces. There are also resources and special programs that make it easy to search for and find those savings. The next time you’re planning an entertainment outing, check out these resources and theatres first.

The following two websites are great resources for searching for discounted movie and theatre tickets.  
GovX  
Through the ecommerce website, GovX, military are eligible to receive military discounts for movie tickets at many theatres including:

Veterans Advantage 
Veterans Advantage members can save up to 48% off the regular box office price at many major theatre chains including:

Theatres that offer military discounts 

The following theatres present movies or live performances and all offer military discounts! 
Atlas Cinemas 
This independently owned and operated theatre company in Ohio advertises discount movie ticket pricing for active military personnel and veterans. Discount is good all day.    
Ford’s Theatre 
Military personnel can use a promo code to purchase discounted tickets to performances at the historic Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C.  
Marcus Theatres 
Marcus Theatres has locations throughout the Midwest and thanks those who serve our country with a military discount. Active duty and retired members of the Armed Forces can see a movie for $7.50 at any time.  Discount is available at select locations.  
Paragon Theaters 
According to its website, most Paragon Theaters offer military discounts for general admission tickets purchased at the box office. Look up the admission prices at your theater location to find out if there is a military discount available in your area.   
Showcase Cinemas 
Showcase Cinemas has movie theatres in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Rhode Island.  Active duty personnel and their dependents can receive special military pricing of $7.50 per ticket for general admission, and $5.50 for matinee and children. Available at all locations except the Showcase Superlux in Chestnut Hill MA.  

Blue Star Theatres 

The Blue Star Theatres program is part of the Blue Star Arts program and a partnership with the Theatre Communications Group and MetLife Foundation. The purpose of this exciting initiative is, according to its website, “to recognize the contributions of service families, to build stronger connections between the theatre community and military families in communities all across the country, and to help in whatever small way we can to aid service people and their families as they seek to be integrated into the lives of their communities.” Participating Blue Star theatres offer discounted or complimentary admission to all military personnel and their families, and veterans.   
Currently there are 136 participating theatres around the country, including:   
American Conservatory Theatre (A.C.T.) 
Military personnel, spouses, children and veterans can enjoy world-class theatre and save with specially priced packages. A.C.T. is a non-profit theatre company in San Francisco presenting dynamic productions, intensive actor training and more.  
Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) 
U.S. military personnel, spouses, children and veterans can receive $10 off up to four tickets per production.  MRT in Lowell, MA is a professional theatre company that produces contemporary plays and is a cultural resource for the community.  
Seattle Repertory Theatre 
Active duty and veteran personnel and immediate families can receive a 50% discount on all tickets.  The Seattle Repertory Theater has been named Seattle Weekly’s Best Theater Company producing plays, educational programs, new play workshops and special presentations.

If you want to visit a theatre that is not listed here and are not sure it offers a military discount, don’t be afraid to ask if it has one. Many places are happy to honor our service members with special savings.
