They say, “everything is bigger in Texas.” Well when it comes to U.S. Army bases, that sure is true. The most populous U.S. military installation in the world, the Fort Cavazos Army base in Killeen, Texas, has a population of more than 53,000. It is also one of the world’s largest military bases area-wise, covering 214,000 acres.
Not only is Killeen home to Fort Cavazos, it’s also where you’ll find Omni. We have an office right on West Rancier Avenue. If you are a service member currently serving at Fort Cavazos, or if you will be moving or traveling to the area, here are some fun activities that we recommend checking out. These are great for adults, kids, families…everyone!
Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA)
Adjacent to Belton Lake, BLORA is the perfect place to spend a day outdoors. There are mountain biking trails, camping facilities, horseback riding, playground equipment, fishing, paintball, and in the summer, a beach is open for swimming. Mayborn Science Theatre
Immerse yourself in an experience filled with light, color and sound at Mayborn Science Theatre. The dome-shaped theatre located on the Central Texas College campus hosts planetarium star shows and laser light shows. Learn about our galaxy by taking a virtual trip into space or watch your favorite music come alive through fantastic visual spectacles. The theatre also hosts birthday parties and field trips for kids.
Central Texas State Fair
The annual Central Texas State Fair takes place every September in Belton, Texas, approximately 22 miles from Fort Cavazos. This four-day family-friendly event is jam-packed with music, entertainment, rides, games and more. From livestock shows and professional bull riding to concerts from local and national music acts, the Central Texas Fair has something for people of all ages. Inner Space Cavern
You don’t have to be an experienced spelunker to explore Inner Space Cavern, one of the best-preserved caves in Texas. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced tour options, each offering different perspectives of the incredible cave formations. The intermediate and advanced tours take guests through rugged, undeveloped sections of the cave. If you or someone in your group has a military ID, a $2 discount will be applied to every ticket that is purchased. Inner Space Cavern is in Georgetown, TX, 43 miles to the south of Killeen.
Purser Family Park
Located just outside of Killeen in Harker Heights, is Purser Family Park. This 35-acre park features playground equipment, dog parks, a Frisbee disc course and a lighted walking/jogging trail. The park also includes facilities that can be rented for events such as birthday parties, family reunions or weddings.
Hidden Falls Adventure Park
Get an adrenaline rush at Hidden Falls Adventure Park, an off-road trail park covering over 2,000 acres and miles of rugged trails. Bring a dirt bike, ATV/UTV or 4×4 and venture over hills, granite creek beds and other challenging terrain. You can also book a fully guided tour. The park is located about one hour south of Killeen and operating hours are Thursday through Sunday.
Don’t have a vehicle? The park itself does not have rentals, but Hill Country Adventure Rentals outside the park gate has vehicles available for rent. Reservations are recommended.
Vive Les Arts Theatre
Who needs Broadway? The Vive Les Arts Theatre is a community theatre dedicated to providing the residents of Central Texas with high quality musical and dramatic productions, seasonal shows, children’s programs and much more. The theatre also offers opportunities for actors, singers, and dancers to showcase their talents in productions.
With Austin, TX 60 miles to the south, Killeen is in easy proximity to all the live music and attractions the state capital is known for. But as you can see from this list, you don’t have to trek to Austin to find exciting things to do. And of course, if you are in town, stop by our Killeen office and say hello!
