“I’m bored.” Have you heard that yet?  When kids are on summer vacation, boredom can set in fast, especially if you’re not going away or sending them to camp. Vacations and camps can be expensive but having a fun summer break doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank.
Some of the most memorable moments can happen close to home without spending a lot of money. Here are some free and inexpensive boredom-busting ideas for keeping you and your family busy over the summer.

Have a family scavenger hunt

Nurture your family’s sleuthing skills by organizing a scavenger hunt. Make a list of things everyone should find, break up into teams and start exploring! This is an activity that could be done outside or inside. Here are some ideas to get you started: Five Senses Nature Scavenger Hunt, Backyard Scavenger Hunt and Rainy Day Scavenger Hunt.

Visit your DoD-MWR library

Summer fun can be as near as your military base. DoD-MWR libraries at military installations and bases worldwide have special summer enrichment programs for children, teens as well as adults. The libraries are running a Summer Reading Program and will also have performances, movie showings, crafts, activities and more. They even have a virtual summer reading program designed for military kids and teens who live far from military bases.

Create an obstacle course

Lure the kids outside and away from the video games with some healthy fitness fun. Create an obstacle course with items you probably already have in your home. This backyard course on Pinterest features obstacles made from pool noodles and hula hoops. Get creative and come up with your own ideas for inspiring your little ninja warriors.

Make homemade instruments

Music has been shown to have many educational benefits for children. Encourage your kids to explore the worlds of sound and song by making homemade instruments. Create your own drums, harmonicas, tambourines and more with simple materials such as straws, soup cans and paper plates.  And of course, everyone can put their DIY instruments to good use and perform a concert for family and friends.

Go on a picnic

Pack a lunch – or brunch or dinner – and head to a park, lake, beach or other beautiful place. Bring a blanket, sunscreen and bug spray and spend a leisurely day enjoying the great outdoors. As for food, think beyond the ham and cheese sandwich. Check out these yummy and healthy kid-friendly foods that will please the pickiest eaters.
You don’t have to have a big budget to have some big family fun. With a little creativity you can turn those cheap summer thrills into priceless memories this season.
