If you are in the military and have a child in grades K-12, did you know that your children have access to free resources that can help them keep up in school?
According to the Department of Defense Education Activity, a child in a military family will move between six and nine times before the child graduates high school. Being in a state of frequent transition and having to adjust to new teachers, classes, curricula, friends and environment can present military children with unique academic challenges.
To address the educational needs of these students, there are several programs that offer free support that can help them succeed. These resources assist kids at every level with homework, studying, test prep, essay writing, proofreading, and more.
Free one-on-one online tutoring
Funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, Tutor.com gives eligible students the opportunity to connect to a live tutor online at any time. Students can receive one-on-one help in over 40 subjects and grade levels. Tutors are also available to help high school students prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT.
To be eligible for this free program, the student must be in a grade K-12 and have a parent in the:
- U.S. Army
- Air Force
- Marine Corps
- Coast Guard (active duty plus part time National Guard and Reserve)
Students who are in deployed DoD civilian families are also eligible, as are active duty or part time service members in one of the above branches. In addition, some military spouses and other adult dependents may be eligible. Visit Tutor.com for complete details about the program and participation eligibility.
Free & discounted SAT/ACT PowerPrepTM programs
Military families can receive free or discounted SAT or ACT PowerPrep programs from eKnowledge. These test prep programs are available online or in a DVD format and include instructor-led videos, interactive multimedia video lessons, practice questions, and much more.
The regular retail prices of these programs range from $199.99-$250.00, but through this special offer for military families, the Standard programs are available at no charge. All other programs are available at significant discounts. There is a nominal fee on some of the programs to help defray costs for shipping, technical support and updates.
Children in military families face challenges that may negatively affect their academic performance. Take advantage of these free tutoring and test prep services and tools and give your children some extra assistance to help them thrive in the classroom and prepare for college.
