Eighty-five miles southwest of Oklahoma City and just north of Lawton, Oklahoma is the United States Army post of Fort Sill. Located at Fort Sill are several military schools and brigades including:
- The United States Army Field Artillery School
- The Marine Corps Field Artillery MOS school
- United States Army Air Defense Artillery School
- The 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade
- 75th Filed Artillery Brigade

If you love history, natural beauty or kid-friendly activities, here are some ideas for keeping you and your family busy during your time in the Fort Sill area.
Visit the Fort Sill Museum
The Fort Sill base itself is rich in history and has been designated a National Historic Landmark. It features approximately 50 historic buildings—46 which are still in use. Fort Sill is where you’ll find the US Army Field Artillery & Fort Sill Museum which occupies 38 of the buildings and houses a collection of more than 235,000 objects. Fort Sill is also where the famous Apache chief Geronimo was imprisoned and buried. Admission is free and all persons over the age of 16 must pass a background check at the Fort Sill Visitor Control Center before entering the base.
Glide down a water slide at Comanche Nation Water Park
Need relief from Oklahoma’s hot and humid summer? Families can cool off and relax at the Comanche Nation Water Park. Enjoy nine waterslides, a Wave Pool, the Lazy River and the on-site Nations of Fun bounce center.
Bike, boat and more at the Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area (LETRA)
LETRA is an outdoor recreation paradise featuring a no-wake lake, playground, picnic areas, mini-golf, year-round camping facilities, summer recreational activities and much more. The area even offers beach volleyball and scuba diving. If you love biking, boating, watching wildlife or simply enjoying scenic views, a visit to the area is a must. Facilities are ADA compliant. Pets are allowed. Military discounts are available.
Take a spin around the rink at Laugh Out Loud
This family-friendly indoor fun park has everything you and the kids need to have an awesome time, regardless of the weather! It has Lawton’s only skating rink, plus mini bowling, laser tag, huge inflatables, an arcade, and Tiny Town a toy-filled play area for the littlest visitors. If you get hungry, have a bite at the Laugh Out Loud snack bar and receive 10% off with your military ID.
Look for elk and bison at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge was established to protect wildlife species that were in danger of extinction. It provides a habitat for more than 50 mammal, 240 bird, 64 reptile and amphibian, 36 fish, and 806 plant species. Bison, elk, wild turkey, prairie dogs, deer, river otters and burrowing owls are just some of the animals that make their home here. Follow the miles of nature trails to explore the refuge on your own or take a tour with a local naturalist.
