Are you ready to set some new goals for yourself in the New Year? For inspiration and motivation, here are some easy New Year’s resolutions that can help you make some simple changes for the better.
- Go for an annual checkup – Sure it is one more thing to add to your “to do” list, but an annual wellness exam offers many health benefits. From getting screened for certain cancers to detecting problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and elevated blood sugar levels, a checkup is an important way to monitor your health.
- Improve career skills – Hone your skills and talents and work your way up the workplace ladder. Take a class, brush up on a computer program, join a networking group, go for additional training, etc.
- Read one book every month – Feed your mind with a novel or non-fiction book.
- Stop texting and driving – No matter how much of a multitasker you think you are, texting while driving is dangerous and, in many places, it is illegal. Don’t do it.
- Cook more often, eat out less – You’ll save money and probably eat a lot healthier. Try new recipes and add more variety to your meals.
- Floss more – Take a minute or two each day to floss your teeth. Support gum and teeth health by removing plaque and preventing tartar buildup.
- Eat breakfast – Boost your metabolism and give your body the nutrients it needs by starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast. Some light and quick ideas include yogurt, whole grain English muffins, fruit, cereal, oatmeal, or a granola bar.
- Make more phone calls instead of texts – Texting may be convenient, but once in awhile it is nice to really catch up by actually speaking to someone. It is a more personal way of staying in touch.
- Increase your water consumption – Water helps detox the body and maintain body fluid balance, and can support healthy kidney and bowel function. Most people do not drink enough of it.
- Recycle – Do your part to help the environment and recycle whenever possible.
- Go to the dentist – Maintain healthier teeth and gums with regular dental checkups and cleanings. Catch problems before they start or when they are minor enough to be corrected.
- Make a new friend or reconnect with an old one – Research shows that having friends is good for your health, so try to build more social bonds this year.
- Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet – Small dietary changes can make a big difference in your health. Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients and antioxidants. Add some to every meal and explore new varieties.
- Shop with reusable bags – Plastic bags produce litter, are not biodegradable, and are harmful to the marine environment. Be more eco-friendly by keeping reusable bags in your car and using them whenever you go shopping.
- Help others – Whether you donate food to a pantry or walk dogs at an animal shelter, volunteering is a rewarding and meaningful way to give back.
